is true with his running mate, paul ryan. unfortunately, we'll probably hear more of that this week. we do have a great surrogate team and they're on the ground in their respective cities or states. they move around. i certainly move around. you talk about deval patrick, i'm in chicago, rahm emanuel, stephanie rawlins blake in baltimore, kasim reed, the list goes on and on. we have the best candidate in president obama and vice president biden. we have the greatest surrogate team, and they're on the ground in those places where there are real people with real issues and real problems, and they're talking about the things that the president talks about, jobs and the economy, health care, education, energy, and tax reform. those are the president's themes. he's never walked away from any of those issues, and it's easier, i think quite frankly for mitt romney to have multiple positions on the same issue because he has no plans. he has no ideas. he has no proposals. he's not ready for prime time. >> okay. we've got a month to go. please spread the word among the surrogates you mentioned we are

'm sure you'll find out in these debates. >> that suddenly became not fun at all for paul ryan. he actually asked for "hardball" questions. what's with all this softball? oh, wait, abortion? let's go back to the softballs, huh, guys? that was just one awkward exchange with reporters today, but it portends a bigger fundamental shift that has just had to happen in the romney/ryan campaign. now, over and over and over again on this campaign, on issues big and small, the romney/ryan campaign before today has been able to use one particular technique to escape the consequences of having unpopular policy ideas or policy ideas they don't particularly want to defend. they do this same thing over and over again, and usually, it works for them. here's the pattern. here's the pattern they have established. here's mitt romney back in august telling scott pelly of "06 minutes" that he believes abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. seriously? mitt romney thinks abortion is okay if a woman's health is in danger? no, not really. his campaign later said, no, never mind what mitt r

point lead there last month. mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, is in michigan tonight addressing a rally at oakland university in the town of rochester just outside detroit. the question tonight, if the mood of voters is changing here, could it also be a sign that it's changing in ohio as well, another key battleground state. the poll in the free press and the pew poll not the only good news for the romney forces. they got a big boost as well in gallup's tracking poll which shows a 47-47 tie among likely voters contacted on the 4th through the 6th. in pre-debate polling, mr. obama, president obama, led by five. as for today's pew poll, the obama campaign takes issue with the party makeup of people surveyed, saying it tilts republican compared to september. the romney campaign, on the other hand, says it's pleased with the numbers. joining us now, jim acosta with the romney campaign in newport news, virginia and on the phone, dan lothian with president obama's campaign. jim, you're on the trail with the romney campaign. what's the reaction to the latest polling, because republican

. what did mitt romney do? he brought in paul ryan who has even less, if you could imagine that, foreign policy experience except maybe perhaps voting against tougher sanctions on iran while he was in congress. as far as that argument's concerned, i think it's rather debunked. i want to read to you very quickly a quote from mitt romney from that video with the 47%. this is his -- this is his foreign policy in a nutshell. so what do you do -- this is about peace in the middle east. you say you move things along the best way you can. you hope for some degree of stability. but you recognize this is an unsolved problem and we kick the ball down the field and hope ultimately somehow something will happen and resolve it. that's what mitt romney said on foreign policy behind closed doors. whatever he says today in a couple of hours, you got to juxtapose that to that quote in the video when he thought no one else was listening. >> john, one of mitt romney's problems is the only specifics he's given as to how his foreign policy differs from president obama is that he's going to talk tougher and s
